Gorilla trekking in Uganda is one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences on Earth. Here is your complete guide.
What is Gorilla Trekking?
Gorilla trekking involves hiking through dense tropical forest to observe mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Uganda is home to over half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas, making it the premier destination for this experience.
Where to Go
The only place for gorilla trekking in Uganda is Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. A small population also resides in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
Gorilla Permits
A gorilla trekking permit costs $800 USD per person (foreign non-residents). Permits must be booked months in advance as only 96 are issued daily. Your permit includes park entry, guide, and one hour with the gorillas.
What to Pack
- Sturdy hiking boots with good grip
- Waterproof jacket and trousers
- Long sleeves and trousers (protect against stinging nettles)
- Gardening gloves (for grabbing vegetation)
- Insect repellent
- Daypack with water and snacks
- Camera with no flash
What to Expect on Trekking Day
Your day starts at 7:00 AM with a briefing at park headquarters. You are assigned a gorilla family and your trek begins. Treks can last from 30 minutes to 6+ hours depending on where the gorillas are feeding. Once located, you spend exactly one hour observing them.
Best Time to Go
The dry seasons (June to September and December to February) offer easier trekking conditions, though gorilla trekking is possible year-round.
