Don't overpack! Our essential safari packing checklist covers everything you need — from clothing and gear to gadgets and documents.
Packing for an African safari can be overwhelming. Here is exactly what you need — and what to leave behind.
Clothing
- Neutral-colored clothing: Khaki, olive, beige, and brown. Avoid bright colors and dark blue (attracts tsetse flies).
- Lightweight long-sleeved shirts: Protect against sun and mosquitoes. Merino wool or quick-dry fabrics are ideal.
- Long trousers: Essential for evening walks and bush dinners.
- Fleece or warm jacket: Morning game drives can be very cold, especially in open vehicles.
- Swimwear: Most lodges have pools.
- Rain jacket: Even in dry season, afternoon showers can happen.
Footwear
- Sturdy walking shoes: For nature walks and gorilla trekking.
- Sandals or flip-flops: For relaxing at the lodge.
Gadgets
- Camera with zoom lens: At least 200mm for wildlife photography.
- Binoculars: Essential for spotting distant animals.
- Power bank: Many camps have limited charging facilities.
- Headlamp with red light: Useful for evening walks without disturbing wildlife.
Health & Safety
- Insect repellent: DEET-based recommended.
- Sunscreen (SPF 50+): The African sun is intense.
- Basic first aid kit: Plasters, antiseptic, painkillers, anti-diarrhea medication.
- Malaria prophylaxis: Consult your doctor before traveling.
- Hand sanitizer and wet wipes: Useful on game drives.
Documents
- Passport: Valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates.
- Visa: Check requirements for each country you plan to visit.
- Travel insurance documents: Including evacuation coverage.
- Flight itineraries and lodge confirmations: Printed copies.
What NOT to Bring
Leave behind: expensive jewelry, heavy suitcases (soft duffels are better), drone (requires special permits), plastic bags (banned in many East African countries).
