It is home to approximately 459 mountain gorillas — nearly half of the world's remaining population. The park also hosts 350+ bird species, 120+ mammal species, and over 1,000 flowering plants. Gorilla trekking here is considered one of the most profound wildlife experiences on Earth, with permits allowing small groups to spend one hour with habituated gorilla families.
