Best Time to Visit East Africa: A Month-by-Month Guide

When is the best time to visit Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Zanzibar? Our month-by-month guide covers weather, wildlife, and highlights.

East Africa offers incredible travel experiences year-round, but timing can make a big difference. Here is your month-by-month guide.

January – March (Dry Season)

Excellent wildlife viewing across all parks. The calving season in Serengeti (January-February) means predator action is at its peak. Zanzibar beaches are perfect. Gorilla trekking conditions are ideal.

April – May (Long Rains)

Low season with fewer tourists and lower prices. Many lodges offer discounts. Not ideal for game drives as animals disperse. Zanzibar and beach destinations experience heavy rainfall. A good time for budget travelers.

June – October (Peak Dry Season)

The best time for wildlife viewing. The Great Migration in Serengeti and Masai Mara is at its peak. July to October features dramatic river crossings. Gorilla trekking conditions are excellent. Expect higher prices and more tourists.

November – December (Short Rains)

Short rains bring lush landscapes and fewer crowds. Wildlife viewing remains good. Great time for bird watching as migratory birds arrive. Good deals on accommodation.
