Ultimate Guide to Gorilla Trekking in Uganda
Gorilla trekking is often described as one of the most profound wildlife experiences on the planet. Here's our comprehensive guide to help you prepare.
Getting Your Permit
Gorilla trekking permits in Uganda cost $800 per person and must be booked months in advance through the Uganda Wildlife Authority. We recommend booking at least 3-6 months ahead for peak season (June-September).
Fitness Requirements
The trek can last 1-7 hours depending on where the gorilla family is located. You should be able to walk 3-4 hours on uneven, steep terrain at moderate altitude (1,160-2,607m). Porters are available and we strongly recommend hiring one.
What to Wear
Long-sleeved shirts, waterproof jacket, sturdy hiking boots, garden gloves, and a hat. The forest is dense and can be muddy even in dry season.
During the Trek
Your ranger guide will lead you through the forest, using radio signals to locate the gorilla family. When you find them, you'll spend exactly one hour in their presence. Keep 7 meters distance at all times and follow all guidelines.
